Lisa Hyper Reflects on Emotional Reunion with Vybz Kartel After His Release
With Vybz Kartel and his co-accused recently freed after over 13 years in prison, dancehall star Lisa Hyper is opening up about how their reunion has reignited her passion for the team that shaped her career and personal life. For Lisa, the news of Kartel’s release on July 31 was nothing short of life-changing.
“[There was] a lot of screaming,” she said, describing her reaction to the announcement. “Mi just lose control … mi neva care how mi look [or] how mi sound, mi just run outta di house and start mek bare noise.”
Once the initial excitement faded, Lisa found herself overwhelmed with emotion, reflecting on the many conversations she had shared with Kartel during his incarceration. “Mi always get emotional when mi really siddung and think bout dem certain way,” she shared, adding that her optimism and positivity helped her hold onto hope for this moment.
Reuniting the Gaza Family
The Portmore Empire, better known as Gaza, was once one of dancehall’s most dominant collectives, led by Vybz Kartel and featuring notable members such as Shawn Storm, Jah Vinci, Popcaan, Gaza Indu, Gaza Kim, Sheba, and Black Ryno. However, the group disbanded after Kartel, Shawn Storm, Andre St John, and Kahira Jones were arrested and later convicted for the murder of Clive ‘Lizard’ Williams.
Now, with their conviction overturned, Kartel and his co-accused are finally free, and the Gaza family has a reason to celebrate. For Lisa Hyper, reconnecting with Kartel, Shawn Storm, and Andre St John feels like regaining a part of her family.
“Gaza started with me — I was there from the foundation… before the Gaza even think bout to be created. Suh seeing Shawn, Teddy, and Vybz… it’s a blessing,” she said.
The reunion is set to culminate in a massive celebration at the Vybz Kartel Freedom Street Party, scheduled for New Year’s Eve at the National Stadium in Kingston. The event promises to be a historic moment for dancehall fans and a testament to the resilience of the Gaza movement.
Addressing the Rumors
As the excitement surrounding the reunion grows, Lisa Hyper has also found herself at the center of public speculation about her relationship with Vybz Kartel. While some have hinted at a “rekindled relationship” between the two, Lisa has been quick to dismiss the rumors, emphasizing that the reunion is about unity and celebrating their shared legacy.
“People always a talk, but mi nuh business with negativity,” she said, addressing accusations that she might be overstepping boundaries in light of Kartel’s engagement to Sidem Öztürk. Lisa made it clear that her focus remains on the positivity and excitement of reconnecting with her Gaza family.
Looking Ahead
With the Portmore Empire’s reunion on the horizon, Lisa Hyper’s passion and loyalty to the Gaza movement remain stronger than ever. For her, this moment is about honoring the past, celebrating the present, and looking forward to a brighter future for the group that shaped Jamaican music history. As New Year’s Eve approaches, all eyes are on the Gaza family, ready to make their mark once again.
