ARTIST BIOGRAPHY

David Constantine Brooks, born November 30, 1981, and internationally known as Mavado, is a Jamaican dancehall deejay, singer, and songwriter whose voice and vulnerability helped redefine modern dancehall music.

Raised in the inner-city community of Cassava Piece in Kingston, Jamaica, Mavado emerged from humble beginnings with a determination that would eventually place him among the genre’s elite. Deeply influenced by the gritty, commanding style of Bounty Killer, a young Brooks performed under the name “Singing Blacks” at local community events. Recognizing his raw talent and unique tone, Bounty Killer took him under his wing at just 15 years old, mentoring him and guiding his entry into the competitive dancehall arena.
Through that mentorship, Mavado was introduced to industry heavyweight Julian Jones-Griffith, who would help shape the foundation of his early career. This combination of street-rooted authenticity and strategic management positioned him for a breakthrough.

In 2004, Mavado released his first official single, “Real McKoy,” a track that quickly resonated within Jamaica’s dancehall circuit and is widely regarded as his breakthrough record. He followed up with “Weh Dem a Do” on the popular Red Bull & Guinness riddim, further cementing his presence. Between 2005 and 2006, he delivered a steady stream of hits that showcased both his melodic delivery and emotionally charged lyricism—an approach that helped shift dancehall toward a more introspective sound.

On July 10, 2007, Mavado released his debut album, Gangsta for Life: The Symphony of David Brooks, through VP Records. The project solidified his status as a leading voice in dancehall and introduced his music to a broader international audience.
Over the years, Mavado has become known not only for street anthems but also for deeply personal tracks that explore struggle, ambition, loyalty, and survival. His distinctive singing-deejay style carved a lane that influenced a new generation of artists, proving that dancehall could balance toughness with emotion.

From Cassava Piece to global stages, Mavado’s journey stands as a testament to resilience, mentorship, and the transformative power of music.
