Serato Slab for Serato Studio - Is It Right For You (My Thoughts)
Firstly, I have used a-lot of controllers for various software and I was hesitant before my purchase.Serato Studio was fairly new, so I though a controller would be a mess. I was wrong. The Serato Slab unit was sturdy, the usb cable was well designed at a 90 degree angle and not flimsy like the other controllers.
The unit is very user friendly and interacts quick with the software, buttons are responsive and knobs feel free. After spending a few hours with Slab and Serato studio i see where it will increase the workflow speed of others.
If you are a Serato Studio user the slab is right for you. If you can try to get a discount before purchase.

If you’ve been waiting for a controller that truly unlocks the power of Serato Studio, SLAB is it. Designed specifically to work seamlessly with Serato Studio, SLAB gives you full hands-on control — and when connected, it unlocks the full version of the software for free. No constant mouse reaching. No creative interruptions. Just flow.
Built to integrate with Serato Sample and even function as an accessory for Serato DJ Pro, SLAB bridges the gap between DJ performance and studio production.
Let’s break down how you can build a full beat from scratch using SLAB.
Designing Drums, Rhythms & Human Feel
Start with the drums.
Shift + Auto Set lets you choose a genre and instantly generate a pattern from Studio’s library.
Want a clean slate? Shift + Delete clears the deck.
To humanize your groove:
Switch to Strip Mode and use the touch strip to dial in swing.
Press Shift + Piano Mode to access step sequencing.
Adjust timing by holding a pad and turning the main encoder.
Control velocity dynamics with the touch strip for a more natural feel.
You can tweak kicks, snares, claps, and hi-hats individually — bringing programmed drums to life.
Expanding Loops & Adding Variation
Once your drums knock:
Press Scene Size to extend your loop (try 4 bars for variation).
Use Note Repeat to add rhythmic fills — from quarter notes down to 1/32 triplets.
Record live variations to avoid static loops.
This keeps your beat evolving instead of sounding copy-pasted.
Chopping Samples & Shaping Sound
Creating a new scene is simple:
Hit Scene Select and tap an empty pad.
Load your sample from the library.
Use Auto Set to automatically create cue points.
Delete unwanted chops or manually assign new ones using Deck Scrub mode.
Shape your sound instantly:
Enter Deck EQ mode to adjust highs, mids, lows, and volume.
Record your chops directly into the scene.
Using Stem Separation for Creative Control
Want just the melody? Or only the bass?
SLAB’s stem control makes it easy:
Enter Deck Stems mode.
Press encoder knobs to mute unwanted stems.
Adjust stem levels independently.
This opens endless remix and flip possibilities inside your production workflow.
Building Basslines & Time Stretching
Add a new sample into another scene and isolate the bass stem.
If a chop plays too fast:
Press Shift + Encoder Mode
Adjust the pad’s BPM with time stretch.
Boost the bass level and add compression through Deck FX mode.
Load built-in effects by holding Shift while turning an encoder knob.
Instant polish. Instant power.
Crafting Melodies with Play-In-Key Mode
Add a synth to a new instrument deck and activate Play In Key mode.
Now every pad plays harmonically in scale — no wrong notes.
